Michael Joseph Gerrity Sharp
October 26, 1952 – February 12, 2016
Much loved host and co-owner of The Four Swallows Restaurant, Mike Sharp, 63, died at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle on Feb. 12, 2016. His daughter Alexandra was at his side.
Growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, Mike attended college in Oregon, and after returning to California, became a skilled welder. 1989 saw Mike, wife Gerry, and daughter Alexandra, relocating to Bainbridge Island. The couple soon bought The Four Swallows, with Mike responsible for the “front of the house,” and Gerry becoming the chef.
Mike fully inhabited his role as co-owner of The Four Swallows, wearing this mantle like a second skin. Whether out and about, or stationed at his customary spot near the host stand, he soon became the public face of the restaurant. He knew so many people, and greeted them so warmly, that a visiting friend, accompanying him about town with increasing amazement, asked if he was running for mayor. He was a superlative and welcoming host, with an uncanny ability to recall practically anyone’s name. Charming, with an understated wit, he reserved the right to be a tease when the need arose.
The restaurant’s wine list was Mike’s true labor of love, as he became enchanted with the vast world of wine. He immersed himself in books, attended countless tastings, made tours to Northwest wineries, and never tired of sharing his enthusiasm for, and extensive knowledge about wine, with both his staff and anyone else who expressed an interest.
Listening to, and playing/performing music was one of his greatest joys. Having played the guitar since high school, he performed in rock bands for most of his adult years, both as guitarist and lead vocalist. He performed at a variety of local venues, and also recorded at several local studios, contributing an original song to the “By Boat or By Bridge” CD.
Michael was affectionate and devoted to those he loved. He was genuinely friendly and engaging with those he barely knew. His kindness, gentleness and quirky grace in moving through this world are sorely missed.
While an advanced cancer took his life, he wanted everyone to know that he never battled the disease. He simply chose the treatments he thought best; and sought to savor the blessings of good food, wine, music and company as long as he was able.
He is survived by his daughter Alexandra and her husband Sam, companion of 21 years Diane Francis, mother Constance Sharp, brother Tom and wife Kathryn, nieces Samantha, Natalie, and Haley, and former wife and business partner Gerry Ferraro.
A private service for family and close friends was held at Port Blakely Cemetery on Feb. 19.
A memorial celebration and open house in honor of Michael’s life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 3 at The Manor House at Lynwood Center. For further information, see the blog at diane4mike.blogspot.com.
