Bainbridge Island resident, Mildred “Mid” L. Mitchell, age 98, died Dec. 18 in Poulsbo.
She was born in Lewisburg, Pa., on July 12, 1903, the daughter of John and Edith (Slifer) Meixell.
Following graduation from Bucknell University in 1925 with a bachelor of arts degree, she moved to New York City where she was a seamstress in a dressmaker’s shop.
There she met Doren Mitchell, and they married in 1927.
Her husband was an electrical engineer with Bell Labs, and she was a homemaker.
They lived in Martinsville, NJ from 1929-1989. Their fieldstone home is now a part of the New Jersey Park and Recreation District and recognized as an historic house.
Mitchell was an artist in many ways. She enjoyed interior decorating, creating a beautiful house and garden, knitting and sewing.
A talented Chinese brushwork artist, she occasionally publicly displayed her work.
At the age of 79, she began ballroom dancing and went on to win many trophies and medals in national and international ballroom competition.
She also enjoyed driving around Bainbridge Island in her white sports car, a practice she maintained until her early 90s.
She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Rekow, Bainbridge Island, Hetty Mitchell, Indianola, and Lynn Mitchell, Palo Alto, Calif.; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
