Nevada Letitia Jane Spearman

Nevada Letitia Jane (Roberts) Spearman, age 105, died Sept. 26 at Messenger House Care Center.

She was born Feb. 8, 1897 in Terre Haute, Ind. to John W. and Julia A. (Bannister) Roberts. In 1925, she married Theodore F. Spearman in Ellensburg.

She was a longtime resident of Yakima, where she resided in her own home until moving to Messenger House in 1998.

She received a life-time award from the NAACP, of which she was a member. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star at Guiding Star Lodge 6 of the Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons, the Big Sisters Club and Mount Hope Baptist Church, all in Yakima.

She is survived by her son, Theodore (Marie) Spearman of Bainbridge; granddaughter Simone L. Spearman and great-granddaughter Saja Spearman Weaver of California; and nephew Thomas Tecumseh of Bremerton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore F. Spearman, in 1984.

Services were held Oct. 5 at Shaw and Sons, with interment at Tahoma Cemetery in Yakima. Remembrances can be made to Mount Hope Baptist Church, 615 S. Third St., Yakima, WA 98901, to the NAACP or a charity of the donor’s choice.
