P. Michael “Mike” Hazel, 69, died on March 22.
He lived with his wife, Joan, on Bainbridge Island for two-and-a-half years, during which time he fought a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.
Mike was born on Nov. 26, 1938 in Bellefonte, Pa., and graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor of science in marketing and accounting.
He began his career with U.S. Steel and eventually went into medical electronics. His path took him to Denver, Colo. and then to New York City, where he was assistant to the vice president of sales for Pfizer.
Mike was the marketing director for the British company Oxford Medical. From his homes in London and St. Petersburg, Fla., he traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia.
He was CEO of a startup company called Human Technologies, with a product named SIBIS that was used to help children with autism. They also marketed the first ingestible thermometer.
During his time with that company, he was able to obtain significant publicity for SIBIS on the CBS Morning Show, 60 Minutes and in several segments of CNN.
Mike was a passionate computer expert, often helping others with their problems. He loved boating and spent much time on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay and later in St. Petersburg.
Whatever Mike did, he did with enthusiasm. He was president of a homeowners’ association both in Florida and in Breckenridge, Colo., where the family still maintains a home.
His hobbies included walking, reading, boating, traveling, fishing and in retirement, volunteering to help lower income individuals with their taxes.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joan; his daughter, Heather Shoultz (Scott) and their children, Sawyer, age 4 and Eden, age 2; his son Craig Hazel (Cindi) and their children Emily, age 8 and Lauren, age 6; and his brother, Joseph, of Bellefonte.
At his request, a memorial service will be held in Breckenridge.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
