Longtime island resident Paul De Los Reyes Tabafunda, age 90, died Jan. 16 in Deming, Wash.
He was born May 15, 1912 in The Philippines to Melquiades and Rosa de los Reyes Tabafunda.
He married Virginia Andrews on July 11, 1942.
He had a varied career, working as a welder at Lockheed and Todd and later in the fishing canneries in Alaska. He farmed in California and Washington and returned to welding at Puget Sound Naval Station, where he retired in 1981.
On the island, he farmed strawberries and raspberries. He loved to play Filipino music, Hawaiian guitar, banjo and the accordion. He also enjoyed playing bingo.
He is survived by his wife Virginia; three sons, Florentino “Sonny,” Randy and Gene, all of Bainbridge Island; six daughters — Patricia Flores of Suquamish, Carmen Voorhees of Poulsbo, Bernice Williams of Seattle; Marcelina Tabafunda of Bainbridge, Elina Tabafunda-Tagent of Canada and Barbara Schaeffer of Suquamish; and 29 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Jan. 21 with funeral services to be held 9:30 a.m. Jan. 22, both at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Burial will be at Seabold Cemetery.
