Richard Herrick Daniel
July 31, 1927 – May 7, 2015
Dick Daniel was a third generation Californian who graduated from Beverly Hills High School in 1945 in his Naval V-5 uniform. After an honorable discharge from the service, he completed his college education at the University of California at Berkeley with a B.A. degree in accounting.
In 1950, Dick went to work at Security First National Bank of Los Angeles. During the next 35 years he progressed from teller to Executive Vice President and Manager of the bank’s Commercial Loan Work-Out Department. After a brief period with Crocker Bank in San Francisco, he joined Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh, retiring in 1993 as Vice Chairman and Chief Credit Officer.
While at Mellon, Dick contributed to the community as President of the Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Board of Trustees; Vice Chairman of the Board of the Forbes Health System; and Vice President of the Western Pennsylvania Economic Council.
Dick moved to Bainbridge Island in 1997 and continued his civic engagement, serving as President of the Bainbridge Performing Arts; Chair of the Special Education Sub-Committee of the FACTS Committee of the School District Board; member of the local Ferry Advisory Committee; and member of the local flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary—where he used his beloved 37’ boat, the Sea Otter, as a part of Homeland Security. Dick was also a member of the Bainbridge Resource Group, made up of concerned citizen taxpayers.
Throughout his life Dick was an avid traveler, scuba diver, and photographer. He loved the outdoors and lived his life with great gusto, enjoying the company of family and friends on his many adventures.
In 2012, Dick became too ill to live alone and moved to Southern California to be nearer to family. He passed peacefully after a period in hospice care. He is survived by his loving daughters Karen (Alan Goldberg) Daniel and Kelly (David) Selva; his dear grandchildren Melissa, Scott, and Patrick; his sister Barbara Tyner; his nieces and nephews; and his daughters’ mother Mary K. Daniel. A private memorial service will be held.
