Former Bainbridge resident Rita D. Sands, age 73, died Dec. 12 in Mesa, Ariz.
She was born Sept. 22, 1928 in Woonsocket, S.D. to Theodore and Ann (Ritter) Hohn.
She married Earl Sands on July 4, 1953 in Tacoma.
The couple lived on Bainbridge Island for many years, where they owned Winslow Coffee Shop.They later moved to Poulsbo and opened the Sands Restaurant.
The couple was a part of the Bainbridge Island and Poulsbo business community for over 40 years.
She was a long-time member of the North Kitsap Fraternal Order of the Eagles, for whom she had served as an officer for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994; son William Sands; sister Elida Hare of Norwalk, Calif.; and two brothers, Wayne and Ronald Hohn of Tacoma.
She is survived by three daughters, Carol Jacobsen of Bainbridge Island, Sharon Sands of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Kathie Peterson of Winona, Minn.; son Steven Sands of Poulsbo; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
She is also survived by brothers Clinton and Clyde Hohn of Tacoma.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 22 at the North Kitsap Fraternal Order of the Eagles.
Memorial donations may be made to the North Kitsap Eagles or a charity of the donor’s choice.
