Bainbridge Island resident Robert G. “Bob” Cabunoc, age 59, died March 3 at Swedish Hospital, in Seattle.
He was born Nov. 2, 1944 in Seattle to Gusbar and Mary (Cunningham) Cabunoc.
After graduating from Bainbridge Island High in 1963, he worked at Boeing as a riveter for seven years and for the next 25 years as a diesel mechanic for Metro Transit, before taking medical retirement in 1999.
His passion was outrigger racing; if there was an event, he was there. He was an official safety officer for the Northwest Outrigger Racing Association, and he attended events throughout the Northwest.
He also was a setup and soundman for luaus, and concerts for Hawaiian drumming. He loved anything to do with the sea — fishing, sailing or eating its bounty.
He is survived by his wife, Jean of Bainbridge; sons Robert of Bellingham, and Tim of Poulsbo; daughter Sherry Cabunoc of Seattle; brothers Jerry of Seattle and Andrew of Neah Bay; sister Loretta Mapanao of Bainbridge Island and seven grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 9-11:30 March 13 at Woodward Middle School, followed by a potluck celebration of life.
Remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements are by Kass Funeral Home.
