Bainbridge resident Roland H. “Rollie” Canavan, age 88, died July 4 at his daughter’s home in Manchester.
He was born May 3, 1915 at Deer Harbor on Orcas Island to Earl and Meta (Pearmain) Canavan.
He graduated from Franklin High School in Seattle in 1933 and went on to study engineering at the University of Washington.
In 1935, he began a 30-year career with the Seattle Fire Department, retiring as captain in 1965.
He was married to Margaret Sparks for 41 years, until her death in 1979.
His part-time retirement included 10 years as fire chief at Fort Lawton, interspersed with travel.
In 1983 he married Muriel Scott; the couple resided in Bremerton, close to the Kitsap Golf and Country Club.
He loved to fish, especially from his home on the Point Monroe sandspit, and to golf at the Wing Point and Kitsap courses. He continued to take to the green well into his eighties.
For many years he served as chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of Washington.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Sparks, and his brother, Leonard Canavan.
He is survived by his wife Muriel of Bremerton; his daughters Colleen (Bill) Meacham, Kathryn Canavan, and Peggy (Jack) Molsness and brother Desmond Canavan; four step-children, Dale Scott, Dee Scott, Debora Reda and Leslie Reidy; 23 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
At his request, no services will be held.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Junior Golf program of Kitsap Golf and Country Club, 3885 NW Golf Club Hill Road, Bremerton, WA 98312; to the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, 701 Dexter Ave. N. Suite 106, Seattle, WA 98109; or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
