Roxanne Pace

Aurelia “Roxanne” Pace, of Bainbridge Island, died on July 11 at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 94.

She was born on Sept. 5, 1914 to William and Anna Maria Kemp in Fort Collins, Colo. She attended 12 different schools between first and 12th grades, graduating from Mount Vernon High School. As a young child she lived on Pleasant Beach, where her father and uncle owned a boat that was part of the Mosquito Fleet, which taxied workers to and from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

She married Lee C. Crandall, with whom se had three children, along with one stepdaughter from Lee’s previous marriage. She was a homemaker and tireless worker and was happiest when surrounded by her family and friends. She loved all animals and rescued and cared for countless numbers.

After Lee’s death in 1955, she went to Olympic College School of Nursing, earning her nursing degree and working in hospitals, nursing homes and for private families. She later married Leonard Pace; they made their home on Bainbridge.

She loved gardening, knitting and baking cookies for her grandchildren; she had an enormous capacity for love, kindness and generosity. Her family would like to express gratitude to all the wonderful people at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center for the love and caring they offered during the last two years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; son Kenneth Lynn; stepdaughter Nataline Hawk; and sister Katherine Haggard. She is survived by son Robert (Faye) Crandall of Auburn, daughter Patricia (Ronald) Marshall of Bainbridge Island; daughter-in-law Angelyn Lynn of Bainbridge Island; son-in-law John D. Hawk of Bremerton; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
