Lifelong Bainbridge Islander Roy Berner Egaas died on Jan. 2. He was 78.
He was born Oct. 3, 1930 to Jacob B. and Selma H. Egaas and grew up in the Rolling Bay and Seabold areas. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1948 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1948-1952. He was a test flight mechanic on the B-36 with the 8th Air Force stationed at Rapid City, S.D. He married Patricia Hockett in 1959.
In 1956 he opened and operated the Union Oil Service Station in Winslow. He operated Bainbridge Concrete Supplies from 1960-1962 and for a brief time worked as a carpenter and car agency manager before opening Roy’s Auto Specialty, Inc. in 1965, at Madison Avenue and Wyatt Way. In 1972, he added the first self-serve gasoline on Bainbridge Island and in 1976 added the island’s first fully automatic car wash.
He is survived by his wife; son David (Lorrie) Egaas and grandson Matthew Egaas, of Bellevue; daughter Diane (RG) Meyer of Bainbridge Island; sisters Bernice Englund of Camas, Wash., Norma Wiggins of Puyallup, and brother, Stan Egaas, of Clatskanie, Ore.; and six nephews and one niece.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 10 at Seabold United Methodist Church. A reception will follow at the church hall. Inurnment will be at Kane Cemetery, Bainbridge Island.
