Longtime Bainbridge resident Ruth DeLany Edwards, age 80, died Jan. 12.
She was born Feb. 8, 1921 in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Clarence and Florence (Mudie) DeLany.
She graduated from Lakeview High School in Chicago and attended the Art Institute of Chicago as a scholarship winner.
In 1945, she married Benjamin Edwards, a mechanic with Pan Am Airways. They moved to the Philippines where they made their home for 28 years. After a brief stay in Hong Kong, they spent the next nine years in South Korea.
She worked as a volunteer in the American School, with the Catholic Women’s Club and maintained an interest in music and the arts.
In 1976, they retired to Bainbridge Island. Active with the Kitsap County Republican Party, she was also involved with environmental causes and Maryknoll missionaries in the Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Ben, of Bainbridge Island; son Dr. Benjamin Edwards III of West Linn, Ore.; daughter Ann Macdonnel of Mission, B.C.; sister Ann DeLany of Poulsbo; and five grandchildren.
A vigil prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 18. The rosary will be held at 12:15 Jan. 19, followed by the funeral mass at 1 p.m. All services will be at St. Cecilia Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to St. Cecilia Catholic Church.
