Samora Sirio John

Sirio John Samora died on Sept. 29 at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton, surrounded by his loving family. He was 84.

Sirio was born Jan. 29, 1925 in Saguache, Colo., to Manuel and Louise Samora.

He was the oldest of 11 children. He married Floriene Archulletta in 1947.

At age 17, Sirio joined the United States Marine Corps and served two tours of duty in the First Marine Division in the Peleliu and Okinawa campaigns of World War II. He was honorably discharged as a corporal, and awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, the WW II Victory Medal, the China Service Medal, the USMC Rifle Marksman Badge and the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon.

Sirio acquired an associate’s degree in Applied Science from Pueblo Junior College. In the following years, he and Floriene started their family of 10 children. In 1962, Sirio, by then an accomplished machinist, moved his family to Washington State. He worked at General Electric, Hanford and Boeing, and after 26 years of service, retired at age 68 from The Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Station in Keyport.

Sirio was an active and a devout member of the Catholic Church. He enjoyed family trips to Colorado, fishing with his sons and grandchildren, dirt bike rides with his children, family camping, and playing the guitar and harmonica. He enjoyed long-distance conversations with his brothers and sisters, working in his shop in the garage, building toys and doll houses with his grandchildren, and eating Floriene’s cooking. Sirio was dedicated to his wife and family and contributed actively to the community. He always provided support and guidance to those in need.

Sirio is survived by his wife of 62 years, Floriene; sons and daughters Sid-Leo, Gary, Manuel, William, Karen, Emma, Yvonne, Patricia and Melanie; brother Elvie; sisters Mable, Ruth, Ronnie and Lena; and all of their families.

Preceding Mass will be 9:30 a.m. Oct. 9 at St. Stephens Catholic Church, 13055 SE 192nd St., Renton. Interment Services are 1:30 p.m. at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 SE 240th St., Kent.
