Sarah Louise Hohn (Deakins) passed away peacefully on September 12, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona where she had benefited from the care of her son Jason and his wife Naomi and their three children for almost six years. She is survived by Jason Hohn and Naomi; daughters Allison Hohn of Edwards, Colorado; Morgan Moulongo and husband Frederick of New Jersey; and eight grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Ada Northcutt and husband John, of Choctaw, Oklahoma; Alice Silverberg and husband Lewis of Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania; and brother Horton Deakins, of Edmond, Oklahoma. Sarah earned a Dietetics degree from Oklahoma University in 1967. She was married in 1968 and settled on Rockaway Beach Road on the island to raise her family. She loved the creative life on Puget Sound. Among her many pursuits she joined a gourmet cooking group and “Theater Sports” on the island; volunteered backstage in the makeup department of the Seattle Opera; took wood-working classes at Seattle Central Community College; and regularly hosted international students on exchange at the University of Washington.
Near the age of 40, in the midst of her creative life, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. This dramatic turn meant intermittent cycles of loss of vision, balance, and energy. The specifics of her health challenges make her participation in a creative life all the more beautiful. While she learned to navigate her new reality she showed us all how to live with zest in the face of adversity.
In the mid-nineties Sarah moved to Madison Avenue, across from the library. She saw her youngest children finish high school in that home before they set off for college. In the following years island organizations became increasingly important to her well-being. Her family is particularly grateful to the Library, Helpline House, St. Barnabas, Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church and Bainbridge Island Garden Tours for giving her hope, help, and friendship over her life on Bainbridge.
