Sidney A Mais died on October 15, 2024, at Madrona House on Bainbridge Island WA. Death was due to complications from Lewy Body Dementia.
Sid was born in Manhattan Iowa, on November 17, 1952. He grew up in a farming family, the middle son with two brothers. His father grew up on Long Island NY, meeting Sid’s mother, an Iowa farm girl in Chicago during World War II., and moving with her to raise their family on her family’s farm. With grandparent’s next-door Sid grew up active in the 4H where his pigs often won blue ribbons. He had a pony who was the focus of many childhood adventures and subsequent stories.
He graduated from Western Illinois University where he continued his passion for sports and was introduced to the game of Rugby which became a lifelong passion. After graduation he worked for the US federal government’s soil conservation program but the pull to move west was strong. First to Portland OR where he had a silk screen business for and followed his passion for Rugby. Later moving to Seattle where he met his long-time partner, Patty. Together they relocated to Bainbridge Island, living together until her death. On Bainbridge he built a studio and taught himself glass etching. Selling his products among other places at the BI Farmers Market.
Sid’s kindness and sense of humor made him a wonderful partner to Frances Atherton who feels grateful for the years they had together.
A Memorial Service will be held on November 16th at 11 AM at Eagle Harbor United Church of Christ 105 Winslow Way West Bainbridge Island WA 98110. All are welcome.
