Longtime Island resident Thelma Marie Lund, age 84, died Dec. 20 at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle.
She was born July 13, 1918 in Snohomish County, the daughter of Olaf and Kari (Robertson) Nordahl.
She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School, and on Dec. 1, 1940 she married commercial fisherman, Ralph Lund. They shared time between Ballard and Bainbridge Island from 1946 until 1962, when they made the island their permanent residence.
While Ralph spent long stretches of time away from home, Thelma made sure the children were properly cared for. She was active in Girl Scouts, with family, friends and, as time moved on, her grandchildren.
But the one constant comfort in her life was her church, Port Madison Lutheran Church. She put others before herself, making time to visit the sick and shut-ins even when she wasn’t feeling her best.
She is survived by one son, Ivan, Jacksonville, Ore.; two daughters, Karilyn Gaines, Shelton, and Jeanmarie Lund, Kingston; 12 grandchildren: Chris Lund, Stacy Schultz, Kelli Berry, Eric Lund, Cameron Lund, Jennifer McCalip, Grant Gray, Scott Gray, Heidi Gaines, Kimberly Anson, Tanya Anson, Brook Ross; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 30 at Port Madison Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Pacific Lutheran Cemetery, Seattle.
Her family thanked to her many friends in the church community who gave her support in the last years of her life.
Remembrances may be made to Port Madison Lutheran Church, P.O. BOX 4787 Rolling Bay, WA 98061-0787.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.
