William A. Edmonds

William A. Edmonds, of Bainbridge Island, died on July 20. He was 83.

He was born on March 13, 1926. Missionary-Emeritus as educator and publisher in Turkey with the Wider Church Ministries from 1949 to 1991, Edmonds had been active in Bainbridge with Eagle Harbor Congregational Church, the Bainbridge Chorale, St. Cecilia Compline Choir, Helpline House, Battle Point Astronomical Association, and Bainbridge Performing Arts.

In 1989 he and his wife were given the Chairman’s Award of the American Friends of Turkey “for their outstanding contributions to Turkish-American understanding and intellectual life.”

He is survived by his wife, Anna; their children Colin, Robert, Susan, and James; grandchildren Maari, Leslie (Jones), Merrill, Sydney (Eyre) and Reyya (Edmin); and his sister, Martha E. Fairbank of Durham, N.C.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to that church, to the Bainbridge Foundation, or to Friends of the American Board Schools in Turkey, Inc., 14 Beacon Street, Rm. 708, Boston MA 02108.
