William Westwood Wyatt, age 76, died April 16 in Seattle at Kindred Hospital .
He was born Mar. 22, 1926 in Portland, Ore. to Thomas and Martha (Westwood) Wyatt.
He was an all-city high school basketball player in Portland and a lettering baseball player at Idaho State. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and later earned his degree in civil engineering from Oregon State in 1948.
He led a long career in civil engineering, both as an employee and as a business owner. In 1958, Bill opened a private firm in Sandpoint, Idaho where he designed bridges and roads, and at various times held the positions of city engineer and Bonner County engineer.
Later, his work evolved into architectural engineering as a commercial and residential developer.
He retired in 1978 to spend the next five years building his dream: the thirty-two foot, all wood, gaff-rigged ketch, “The Seeker.” He was also an accomplished artist and sculptor.
He is survived by Betty, his wife of nearly 55 years, of Bainbridge Island; son Scott Wyatt of Seattle; daughter Chris Wyatt of Bainbridge; two grandsons, Aaron Wyatt of Kelso, Wash. and Todd Wyatt of Seattle; mother-in-law Maurine Ross of Bainbridge; and daughters-in-law Rochelle and Linette Wyatt.
