All Bainbridge Island residents, uplanders and waterfront property owners alike, have an interest in maintain the health of Puget Sound. For those of us on Bainbridge Island, the Sound is our front yard.
Over the years, when I’ve told people that West Sound Wildlife Shelter cares for injured and orphaned coyotes, the response has ranged from cheering to frowns. I’m confident the frowns would melt away if those people were able to see what I just saw – four pairs of skittish brown eyes staring up at me.
It’s not official yet, but one could assume that the 23rd District’s next state senator will be Rep. Christine Rolfes. She is midway through her third term in the State Legislature and likely will be appointed by Kitsap County commissioners to replace fellow islander Sen. Phil Rockefeller, who was recently appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire to the Northwest Power and Conservation Council.
I was working the day shift at the Harbour House. The place was empty until she stepped in out of the storm. She walked toward me like a centipede with 98 legs missing and ordered a cold beer in a warm glass. I set the beer in front of her and she gulped it down like a piranha on a corn dog.

With three current City Council members deciding against seeking re-election and a fourth facing stiff competition, it appears there will be another substantial turnover as there was during our last council election two years ago. That one was perhaps more momentous because it became at the heels of voter approval of new form of government. Still, more change is on the way.

Many of 30 or so islanders who attended the two-hour Central Ward meeting on Tuesday expressed strong negative opinions about how the city’s council and staff are running the government. It’s difficult to know how representative they are of the community as a whole, but it’s clear from many of their statements that they believe the city began squandering public funds years ago and are still doing it.
