What a glorious time to be a Spartan.

Though not exactly underdogs, the Bainbridge High soccer team won the 3A state title — for the first time in the school’s history — against a scrappy Mercer Island team on Saturday.

The victory in the finals came after a playoff win against No. 1 Shorewood. And Mercer Island was no slouch, either, ranked at No. 6.

Few expected the Spartans to return to the state championship match after last year’s golden run to the top, where the Spartans fell in the finals to Camas.

Oh, but that was then. And now, how great it is to bask in Bainbridge’s glow, especially given the recent state title claimed by the BHS girls lacrosse team — their ninth title — and the state crown won by the JV girls team the week before.

Considering the spectacular season and upcoming trip to nationals by the Bainbridge Girls Lightweight 8+ rowing team, our island teams have enjoyed a ridiculous amount of success in recent weeks.

Players, coaches, parents and everyone on the island have justifiable reason to walk with some prideful swagger this summer.

And let’s remember, the excellence of our young standouts is displayed not only on the field of athletic competition, but in the classroom and community as well.
