Christmas is coming! With the promise of gifts, stuffed stockings — and piles of trash and wrapping paper.
But here comes Bainbridge Island Zero Waste to the rescue: the group has gathered a long list of recycling information that will help this holiday season cause less of a strain on landfills while preserving our planet’s limited resources.
Some highlights:
Have bubble wrap? Recycle it (clear, not colored; remove all tape) – from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16 and Sunday, Jan. 17 at Bay Hay & Feed. Styrofoam (snappable) blocks (clean, dry, white; remove tape and stickers) will also be accepted.
Dud or dead batteries? Take them to the transfer station on Vincent Road.
While you’re there, you can also drop off cardboard boxes and gift bags (remove non-paper handles and non-paper decorations) unless you have curbside recycling.
The transfer station also accepts computer monitors and CPUs, laptops, tablets and TVs.
Cell phones and small items (calculators, camcorders, iPods, MP3 players, printer cartridges, video games, etc.), computer peripherals can be taken to Best Buy or Staples.
Compostable “peanuts” – put them on the ground, add water and watch them disintegrate.
Holiday light strings can be dropped off at Ace Hardware through Jan. 17.
Plastic bags can be dropped off at Town & Country and Safeway.
And your leftover tree? Boy Scout Troop 1564 will pick it up at the curbside on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016. Trees are chipped and used locally. Make a reservation for pick-up at www.treerecycle.net.
Have a happy holiday season, but please recycle.
And if you can, leave the coal out of the stockings and in the ground.
