President Trump’s 62nd week in the White House came to a panicky and frantic ending, with yours truly (editor@bainbridgereview.com) getting email after email from the president and his children.
Here was one from Eric Trump, who wanted a $1 donation from me but began: “Brian, No one is better at embarrassing the FAKE NEWS media than the ‘journalists’ themselves.”
(“Then why do you need a dollar from me?” I wondered.)
And here was another from Lara Trump, who asked, “Are you with us?” and added, “We will prove to every LIBERAL talking head in the media that our movement is still alive.”
Then Trump Headquarters asked, “Are you still with President Trump, Brian?”
“The media only wants to talk about trash, but President Trump wants to talk about MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
A few more followed from Trump Headquarters, until President Trump — no doubt during a few minutes of his “executive time” — emailed me to say, “Brian, I want to level with you.”
That got my attention, believe me. Somebody’s got some ‘splainin’ to do, I imagined.
“America needs more champions who will FIGHT for our agenda,” Trump continued, then warned, “with everyone out to stop us, this isn’t the moment to stop fighting and let the swamp win.”
Suspicious, I was, that my $1 donation would defeat the swamp. Wouldn’t a better approach center on increased funding for the Corps of Engineers and their flood-control projects? Sandbags, levees, pumps — that sort of thing? Wouldn’t that be a better way to drain this swamp I’ve been hearing so much about?
And then the tsunami of emails passed. Apparently, the swamp had been defeated, sponged up, or whatever. I can’t say for sure because I stopped paying attention and was watching college basketball on the TV.
Sorry if I missed it. But here’s what Trump’s 62nd week in office looked like from the viewpoint of those who really matter — newspaper cartoonists from across the country and around the globe.
