The Spartans placed 10th in team competition at the 3A state championship Feb. 19.
Bainbridge scored 119.825, and finished fourth in the floor exercise with 44.075.
The Spartans added difficulty and new skills to their floor routines recently, which helped the team earn higher scores on floor, coach Cindy Guy said.
Auburn Mountain View won the state championship with 169 points, while 2009 champion Columbia River took second.
Six Spartans competed in the floor exercise. Adrienne Palay scored a team-high 9.175 followed by senior captain Katie Mathews’ 9.125.
Palay placed 22nd all-around with 33.175 points. The junior scored team-highs in all four events. Senior Talia Weiss finished 34th all-around with 31.475.
Weiss and Mathews were also named to the All-Academic State Team.
Bainbridge graduates four seniors from its state squad: Mathews, Weiss, Laura Bricklin and Eva Fazzini.
Palay and Grace Allen were the only underclassmen who competed at state.
“For Grace it was a good experience for her to go as a sophomore and have that one year under her belt because she’s going to have to go all-around next year,” Guy said.
The Spartans will also return sophomore Megan Duncan, as well as junior Anne Schwartz and freshman Marielle Summers, both of whom were injured in January and did not compete at state.
“The season was just winding down that we didn’t have enough time to recover,” Guy said. “When you qualify as individuls you have to come in as individuals.”
Even though they had completed their rotations, the Spartans remained at the Tacoma Dome to watch the team competition.
“We were sitting right in front of floor during the team competition and we could see that Mount Si’s coach was having a meltdown,” Guy said.
Mount Si had forgotten its music for the floor exercise, Guy said, and faced a one-point deduction for performing without music.
Guy, who had Bainbridge’s floor music in her gym bag, offered Bainbridge’s CDs to Mount Si.
Mount Si’s Georgia Reynolds scored a 9.3 on floor, and placed second all-around with a 37.225.
“They were very thankful and everbody was crying afterward,” Guy said. “We were glad we could help them out.”
The Spartans attended the individual final Saturday and were already looking ahead to next season.
“We took notes and scouted some other teams,” Guy said. “Kind of looked at what teams were doing so we knew what our competition was for next year.”
