Grace Porter and Kate Jameson are crowned girls’ doubles champs, while Sasha Porter takes second as do three other Bainbridge teams.

Several Bainbridge sports teams finished off the season with a flourish over the weekend.

The tennis team wrapped up one of its best seasons in years as Grace Porter and Kate Jameson won the girls’ doubles title at the state tournament in Kennewick.

The duo defeated Kelly Crandall and Nora Tan of Mercer Island 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the finals.

It is the first state championship for both. The last Bainbridge girls’ doubles team to win a state title was Marlene Baer and Molly Jacobi, who won the 3A title in 1990.

Also earning a medal was Sasha Carter, who lost in the title game to Natalie Allen of Holy Names 6-2, 2-6, 3-6.

Carter lost just two games on her trip to the finals. She defeated Emma Leimback of Yelm and Chelsea Bailey of Mercer Island in straight sets in the opening round and semifinals, respectively.

It is Carter’s third straight finalist medal. She won a 1A state title as a freshman at Annie Wright Academy, then defeated Allen last season to win another state title.

Scott and Matt Alderson took home a fifth place medal with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win over Jared Thomas and Andrew Smith of Mercer Island.

The duo lost their first round match, but came back to beat Hunter Nelson and Miles Jamieson of Shorewood, then outlasted Erik Snyder and Jeremy Chow of Mercer Island 7-6 (3-7), 6-4, 6-0.

The girls’ team took second to Mercer by one point. It’s the second straight year the girls’ team has placed second.

The fastpitch team also took second for the second straight year at the 3A state tournament at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.

They made it to the finals for the third year in a row with the pitching of sophomore Katie Raben and some timely hitting.

Raben threw all four games at the state tournament, winning three of them.

She pitched two shutouts on the first day of the tournament – an 8-0 win over Peninsula and a 6-0 win over Mt. Spokane – giving up just one walk and four hits while striking out 18.

Raben held Kelso, the two-time defending 4A champions, to just two runs while Clara Dunn singled in the go ahead run in the fifth.

The Spartans could not overcome Juanita pitcher Allie Rhodes in the championship game, losing 6-1.

Erin Kinney had two hits for the Spartans in the game, including an RBI triple.

The boys’ soccer team could not overcome two disallowed goals in its 3-0 loss to the Camas Papermakers in the 3A title game in Lakewood.

Connor Winship had a goal called off in the 18th minute when the sideline referee ruled Sebastian Scales offside while Camas goalkeeper Zach Anderson caught an Alex Coplan free kick in the 60th minute that the referee originally determined Anderson went over the line with the ball, but he waived it off moments later after talking with the sideline official.

The boys’ lacrosse team had many shots, but could only get three goals in its 5-3 loss to Mercer Island in the Division I state title game Saturday at Seattle Center. It is the lowest scoring game in state history.

Alex Crane had two goals and three ground balls while Jacob Knostman scored the other goal. Freshman goalie Reynolds Yarbrough had eight saves.

Five Spartans were named to the all-state team. Henry Deery-Schmitt was a second-team selection in attack while Cameron Parker was a second-team selection in the midfield.

Quinn McMahon and Nick Lacy were second-team selections on defense while Jacob Goodman was a third-team selection in the midfield.

Cameron Brink was the only medalist for the track team at Star Track XXIX at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma over the weekend.

The junior took fifth in the discus with a throw of 149 feet, 10 inches. Jon Lawson of Prairie won the event.

Mark Smith placed 13th in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 2 inches while the girls’ 4×400 meter relay missed out on the finals with a time of 4:17.54.
