Bainbridge beats Bucs, close to 1st league title in years

It’s been a long time since Bainbridge has won an Olympic League title, but girls basketball coach Zach Burnham thinks this could be the season to end that streak.

“It’s been 24 years since we’ve won the Olympic League,” Burnham said. “Hopefully we can finish out strong.”

The Spartans are headed in the right direction, winning their sixth straight by beating Kingston 69-36 Jan. 31.

Both teams tried to gain the upper hand early on defense by using a full-court press. It wasn’t until the six-minute mark that Spartan freshman Ava Bounketh converted a layup for the first points of the game. From there the visitors scored a few fastbreak points to take a 15-5 lead after the first period. Senior Sierra Berry led the way with six points.

Both teams executed more consistently on offense in the second quarter. Spartan senior Hannah Bounketh and Berry both made two three-pointers back to back, allowing the Spartans to jump ahead by 13 points with three and a half minutes remaining in the half.

Bainbridge led 33-16 at the break. Bella Ramirez led the Spartans with 10 points and Buccaneer junior Taizah Franklin led Kingston with six.

“We reset ourselves at half, ” Ramirez said. “Like we’re not playing the best, but we just had to have a good third quarter to have a good rest of the game.”

The Spartans forced turnovers to go on a 10-0 run to begin the second half, forcing Kingston coach Charles Deam to call a timeout at the 5:31 mark. Despite their overwhelming lead, the Spartans maintained their full-court press, not allowing a single point until the 3:22 mark when Bucs senior Tavyn Belgarde converted a layup. The Spartans emerged out of the third period with a 17-2 advantage, taking a 29-point lead.

The Spartans jumped out to their largest lead of the night at 38 off a senior Carlyn Moore three-point play with two minutes remaining in the game.

Deam noted how his team could improve in time for the postseason. “We just gotta get better for next game,” he said. “Just try to work on our rebounding and work on things that’ll carry over to the next game.”

Bainbridge is now 11-0 in league play, 14-4 overall. Kingston dropped to 4-7 in league, 8-11 overall.
