VANCOUVER, Washington – Bainbridge made some big steps toward getting its gridiron game in gear last week when the Spartans traveled to Vancouver last Friday to face off against King’s Way Christian. The island team gave an improved showing in almost every quantifiable metric, but were ultimately bested 53-28, their third straight loss of the year.

The defeat on the road left Bainbridge with an overall season record of 0-3.

BHS was outscored 14-7 in the first quarter and 20-7 in the second. The Spartans were held to zero in the third while KWC put up six.

The fourth quarter was Bainbridge’s ball all the way, though. The Spartans outscored their host, 14-13.

Two Spartans in particular shined brightly Friday: senior wide receiver/defensive back Lyle Terry, who put up two of the Spartans’ four touchdowns, and sophomore kicker Tanner Shattuck, who went 4-for-4 in conversion attempts.

The island squad’s first-quarter touchdown was scored by Terry on a 43-yard pass from Gannon Winker. Shattuck came through with the kick.

Terry earned the second quarter’s sole Spartan touchdown on a 75-yard kickoff return. Shattuck again delivered the point after.

In the fourth, the first BHS touchdown was scored by Eric Jung on an 86-yard kickoff return, with Shattuck again doing his thing on the kick. The final trip to the end zone was delivered courtesy of Alex Ledbetter, a 15-yard run, plus another great kick.

Winker managed 90 passing yards throughout the game.

Ledbetter led the rushing game with 51 yards and Terry racked up the most receiving yards, 51.

The Spartans will see if they can step it up even more, looking for that first win of the season, on the road against Lakeside High Friday, Sept. 23 before returning to host Bishop Blanchet for the year’s second home game at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30.
