The Bainbridge Spartans boys basketball team remains undefeated with a 87-66 victory over Sequim Dec. 8.
“It feels great but above all else, these kids are playing with joy and connected,” head coach Will Ferris said. “The wins and losses don’t matter as much as the meaning we create together.”
The Spartans and Wolves battled each other in the first quarter. Kaden Thielman and Sam Nylund worked together to score 11 of the 14 points. However, Sequim stuck behind with 12 points of their own.
The Spartans began to fall into foul trouble in the second quarter. Nylund picked up three fouls and sat for the half while others reached four or five fouls by the third quarter.
“We have two starters out and guys in foul trouble, now you are deep in the bench,” Ferris said. “We practice so hard that we have 13 guys who can play and I trust all of them. I was happy to see Evan Burke hit some shots.”
Burke scored five points in the second quarter and Will Rorhbacher scored nine points in the paint by halftime. The two teams traded baskets in the third quarter. However, Bainbridge began to slip away with a 67-54 lead after three quarters.
Nylund distributed and scored from the post while Thielman reached 21 points after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, Burke sealed the game with a couple of three-pointers to make it 87-66. Afterward, Ferris looked forward to the North Kitsap rivalry matchup on Dec. 12.
“It’s naive talking about how you will beat someone,” Ferris said. “I tell Scott [Orness] all the time those guys inspire Kitsap County more than anyone else. We just have to play our game.”
