Bainbridge golfers of all ages headed to state

Several Bainbridge golfers scored well enough in the two-day District 3 tournament this week to qualify for state.

The 33rd Washington Junior Golf Association Championship is being held at Glendale Country Club, Overlake Golf and Country Club and Bellevue Golf Course. The tournament began Wednesday and ends Friday.

In the boys’ 16-17 division, islander Carl Jonson shot a combined 146 in two rounds to win his division. Jonson posted the low round of the first day, July 20, with a score of 71. Jonson came back to the pack during the second day, shooting a 75, but his consistent play was enough to ward off John Jordan of Olympia and Troy Means of Silverdale, both of whom shot a combined 147.

Just two shots behind Jonson, fellow islander Bobby Griffin shot a 147 and also qualified for the state tournament. Griffin had a rough first day, shooting a 77, but he responded by posting a 71 on the second day, vaulting himself ahead of all but three of his competitors.

Two more Bainbridge linksters qualified for the 14-15 division of the state tournament, and a third Bainbridge player will be an alternate. William Whealdon finished in seventh place, shooting a combined 159 over two days. Kris Thompson finished six shots behind Whealdon, shooting 80 on the first day and 85 on the second. Rusty Furth finished one shot behind Thompson. He shot 83 on both days.

Sam Warkentin of Bainbridge Island ran away with the 8-11 division. He shot 37 in the first round, two shots better than his competitors. His 38 on the second day was the best round of the afternoon as well.

Anna Bourland was the lone girl from Bainbridge who qualified for state. She won the 16-17 division by 10 strokes. She shot a 75 the first day — the only player to shoot below 80 — and a 79 the second day.
