The BHS softball team won the 3A state championship, defeating Holy Names 6-2 in the title game on Saturday afternoon.

“Things were tense for a few innings,” said coach Liz McCloskey. “Then we got the bats going.”

The Spartans broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth with a four-run outburst against Cougar ace Fairleigh Winters. After Holy Names scored two in their half of the frame, Bainbridge put the game away with two runs in the top of the seventh.

Chelsie Kakela, sidelined for much of the year, made her final game as a Spartan a memorable one with two hits and three RBIs. Brittany Wisner and Cara Thompson also had two hits, with Thompson doubling and adding an RBI.

Lindsay Willman completed what may have been the most dominant performance in the tournament’s history with her fourth complete game in a span of just over 30 hours. Earlier in the day, she threw her second no-hitter in the tournament as the Spartans defeated Enumclaw 2-0 in the semi-finals. Only an error prevented her from throwing a complete game.

Thompson drove in one of two runs in the bottom of the fifth, while Kakela had two hits.

The previous day, Willman threw a no-hitter against defending champion Kennedy, and followed that up with a one-hitter against Union, the eventual third-place finisher.

The Spartans finished the season with a 26-4 record.
