A multi-divisional daylong tournament kicked off what will be the climax of another season of summer roller hockey on Bainbridge Island Saturday, July 26 at Battle Point Park.

There, the Bainbridge Roller Hockey League held matches between teams throughout its three age-based divisions to decide the lineup for playoffs, which began Wednesday.

Season championships are slated to be held at Battle Point Park beginning with the D1 consolation match at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2. Matches begin approximately on the hour following the first game, with the league awards ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m.

Several players were specifically recognized by BRHL president Dawn Janow Saturday including long-time league members and program seniors Lucas Burzycki, Jack O’Dell, Luke McJunkin, Brock Weitl and Mo Greason.

Janow also highlighted the success of the league’s youngest player, Bea Skipton, 6.

Janow said that 6 was, “A little younger than we normally start, but [Skipton’s] older brother plays and she spent 2013 skating around the rink while he played. She came into the season already a strong skater and is having an amazing season.”

There are 160 kids playing on the league’s 14 co-ed teams this year. Players range in age from 6 to 18, with some coming from as far away as Port Orchard to play, and vary in skill level with some being accomplished skaters and others attending the season’s first sessions never having stood on skates before.

The teams do not play opponents from other school districts or geographical areas, but each other, creating a unique community among the players and families.
