Sailors from the Bainbridge Island Sailing Team claimed first place at the Northwest District of the Interscholastic Sailing Association (Northwest District) team racing championship.
The competition was held April 28-29 at Western Washington University’s Lakewood sailing complex on Lake Whatcom.
The win entitles BHS to attend the prestigious Bake Team Racing National Championship, this year to be held Memorial Day weekend at MIT in Boston, Mass.
Spartan team captains Kris Thompson and Peter Carle, and their teammates Nate Greason, Lea Fetterman, Carissa Block, Nels Challinor, Stasi Burzycki and Josh Rentz sailed a perfect 11 races with no losses.
Because of incomplete rotation, the final score was nine wins, zero losses.
Spartan coach Susan Kaseler said the team exhibited great speed, extensive knowledge of the tactics of team racing, and superior boat handling earning the full respect of their competitors.
The three helmspersons understood the teamwork concept well and their crews executed their roles diligently in the long two-day regatta of for the most part light and fickle winds, she said.
Ten schools competed in this division for the championship. Seahome finished second with eight races, one loss and North Kitsap was third with seven wins, two losses.
BHS sailors included Connor Juckniess, Peter Kirk, Nick Till, Will Cassella, Geoff Bresler, Will Brown, Lucas Burzycki, Olivia Moeller, Anka Burzycki and Charlie Snapp.
