SEATTLE – In their first meet in nearly a month, Bainbridge High edged Nathan Hale and Chief Sealth in gymnastics at Nathan Hale High late last week.

The Spartans finished on top with 143.35 points. The Raiders of Nathan Hale claimed second with 139.55, while the Seahawks of Chief Sealth finished third with 121.85.

Bainbridge Coach Cindy Guy said she moved some of the team’s junior varsity athletes into events to give them a chance to compete after the Spartans’ long layoff from its last meet.

“I just sort of mixed up the lineup a bit,” Guy said.

“We had super great team spirit. I was very proud of them,” she said.

Bainbridge’s Sarah Rice was the all-around champion, with a score of 33.7.

Fellow Spartans Miller Shor placed third (29.85) and Mila  Lesh, sixth (26.78).

Rice took first in bars, beam, floor and vault.

On bars, the Spartan standout scored 7.9 for first place.

Shor claimed second with 6.7, while Lesh was sixth with 6.05.

Bainbridge placed first and second on beam. Rice had a 9.4 on beam, while Shor tallied 8.1.

On the floor exercise, Rice finished with a score of 8.05. Teammate Dominique D’Onofrio placed third (7.1) and Shor, fifth (7.0).

Rice was awarded a score of 8.35 for a first in vault, while Shor tied in second at 8.0.

The Spartans have been focusing this week on their Friday meet against Holy Names on the road. Bainbridge and Holy Names went back-and-forth at the end of the season last year.

“We need to see how we stack up against Holy Names,” Guy said.

“Last year we beat them at Metros by just a little, and the next week at districts they beat us by a little bit,” she recalled.

It’s a real rivalry, she noted.

“They are our O’Dea,” Guy said.

The Spartans worked on endurance at practice last week. This week, it’s that and more.

“We’re working on routines and trying to keep our endurance up. The kids are trying more twisting vaults, which are worth more value. They’ll keep working on that.”

“You really can’t forget any event,” Guy added. “You have to train all four, all the time, or else it will really show.”
