SEATTLE – The Bainbridge High varsity wrestling team captured the fourth-place spot in the recent Metro Championship Tournament at Rainier Beach High School.
Several individual island grapplers managed top 10 finishes as well, in a league-wide event which saw participants from O’Dea, Rainier Beach, Eastside Catholic, Ingrahm, Nathan Hale, Ballard, Cleveland, Franklin, Chief Sealth, West Seattle, Bishop Blanchet, Roosevelt, Garfield and Lakeside in attendance.
The Spartans ended the day with a team score of 109.
First place went to O’Dea (229), second to host school Rainier Beach (145.5) and third to Eastside Catholic (121).
The best performing Spartan of the day was sophomore Cameron Williams, who claimed the top spot in the 113-pound bracket. He passed through two early byes, moving on to win three consecutive matches.
In the 106-pound bracket, Bainbridge freshman Garrett Swanson finished in fifth place.
Indigo Weappa, a sophomore, claimed a sixth-place finish in the 120-pound division.
Junior co-captain Oleg Maguire also finished sixth, in the 132-pound bracket.
Freshman Doug Takada managed a sixth-place finish as well, in the 138-pound bracket.
Senior Spartan co-captain Nate Michaels finished fifth in the 160-pound contest, and fellow senior Clay Wren ended the day in eighth place in the 170-pound bracket.
Junior Mac Schelbert managed a third-place finish in the 195-pound bracket.
The Regional Championship tournament is slated to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, at Nathan Hale High School, and the State tournament will again be held at the Tacoma Dome on Friday, Feb. 16 and Saturday, Feb. 17.
