After a 4-1 victory and a 1-0 loss in the 2008 Viking Cup, the U-12 White Ice soccer squad headed into the quarterfinal round in fourth place.
But the Ice played their way into the semifinals thanks to strong defensive plays by Kayla Buchmeier, Jennifer Scharrer and goalkeeper Eryn McCassey, and consistent midfield control by Charlotte Furner, Kate Matthews, Sara Meyers, Carly Millerd, Isabel Saez, and Kamryn Coryell.
Strikers Lindsay Wienkers and Caroline Ginder provided steady pressure and many shots on goal. In the see-saw semifinal match, the Ice relinquished its 2-1 lead with less than 30 seconds in regulation. In the nail-biting shoot-out, Kyra Wortley was a standout at keeper, staving off all four shots she faced, while Allison Snare and Samantha Opalski hit shots for the Ice to seal the shoot-out win 2-0, upsetting the first place team which moved them into the final round.
The finals matched the White Ice against the undefeated team which had beaten them already in the tournament. Neither side scored during regulation and overtime play. Once again, Kyra Wortley held her ground in the ensuing shoot-out while Brooke Brigham nailed the fourth and final penalty kick to give the Bainbridge White Ice the 2008 Viking Cup Championship victory.
