The Spartan baseball team delivered back-to-back home-field thrillers this week.
While Bainbridge (2-1 in league, 3-2 overall) came out on top with a walk-off single from JJ Wilford to defeat Franklin Tuesday, the Spartans fell in eight innings to Eastside Catholic Wednesday.
Bainbridge will have a chance to even the series when they take on Eastside Catholic on the road at 7 p.m. Friday.
After leading 3-1 through six innings, Bainbridge gave up four Eastside Catholic runs in the top of the seventh to go into extra innings Wednesday.
Tied 4-4, Dustin Lewis walked the leadoff hitter and was relieved by Daniel Wyman.
Wyman picked off the runner at second, and the next batter grounded out to the shortstop for the second out.
But the Cruasders weren’t done yet. The go-ahead run reached on a single to deep left, and Eastside Catholic took the 6-4 lead with a two-run home run to left center.
The Spartans escaped the inning, down 6-4, with a fly out to center field.
Leadoff batter Robby Ackerley was struck out in the bottom of the eighth, but Cole Rabinowitz got the Spartans’ bats going with a single.
Cameron Kaminski reached first after the Crusaders got the force out at second base but were unable to turn the double play when the second baseman dropped the ball.
Kyle Schneider drew a walk to put runners on first and second, and Mitch Main singled to load the bases.
Sophomore Steven Wellbrock ended the Spartans’ rally with a fly out to center field.
Wilford’s walkoff single
With two outs and runners on the corners, Wilford’s walkoff single up the middle led Bainbridge past Franklin 4-3.
Willford went three-of-four with a double.
Both teams went scoreless through four innings before Dustin Lewis gave up a run with one out at the top of the fifth.
The Spartans turned a 6-5-4 double play to get out of the inning, and opened a scoring run of their own in the bottom of the fifth.
Ackerley singled down the third base line, reaching third on a throwing error.
Schneider tripled, bringing in Ackerley from third.
Mitch Main followed with another triple, scoring Schneider for the 2-1 lead.
With sophomore Steven Wellbrock at the plate, Main scored on a passed ball, 3-1.
Welbrock was thrown at first, and Wiford followed up with a double before senior Kevin McCormick ended the rally.
Main took the mound in the top of the sixth, giving up a leadoff single. Main struck out the second batter, walked the third and gave up another single to load the bases.
Main walked in the Quakers’ second run, and Franklin tied up the game with a sacrifice fly 3-3.
The senior loaded the bases again by hitting the next batter, but Schneider went all the way to the warning track to catch the pop fly and close out the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Ackerley flew out to first before Schneider reached on an error.
Main reached on a fielder’s choice, and Wellbrock’s right field single put Spartan runners on the corners before Wilford’s game-winning hit.
Main earned his first win of the season, going two innings with one earned run.
