Bainbridge High head soccer coach George Vukic said he was scratching his head after the boys soccer team finished their last game of the season with a 0-0 draw against Bishop Blanchet Wednesday.
“It was an unusual evening,” he said.
“We were strong but our touches were off, we had a dozen good hacks but we couldn’t finish, and they had a good goalie they were tough to crack,” Vukic said.
Even with finishing the season with a tie, the Spartans still finished the regular season without a loss in league, with a record of 6-0-4.
“I don’t know how long it has been since we have been undefeated,” said Vukic.
Prior to the Wednesday game, BHS had been busy.
Starting on April 21 the Spartans played four games in six days, and won them all. BHS scored 15 goals in the four games and gave up just 3.
“We were on a bit of a roll,” said Vukic. “But after playing so much then having four days off it could take a little time to get it back.”
Offensively, the Spartans have been paced by Devereaux Kesler, who had scored five goals in the previous four games.
And all season, it had been Sebastian Scales and Connor Winship who had led the way.
The Spartans have had their fair share of goals this season, but their defense is what has been the strongest. Factoring in non-league games, in the 16 games this season, BHS had just one game where they gave up more than one goal. The Spartans also recorded seven shutouts.
“If we can break the ice and score early, we will do fine, that gets inside the opponents head,” said Vukic. “If we can do that, I don’t foresee any trouble.”
Even with finishing the season undefeated, because of the point system in soccer, BHS still finished in second place behind Lakeside.
The postseason will begin Wednesday for the Spartans and they will play either Franklin or Seattle Prep.
Vukic said his team is confident and he feels good about their chances.
On the other hand, BHS will have gone a week without a game before the playoffs start and they seem to have better outcomes in games where they play consistent.
“We are a little edgy about having bad luck like we did today,” said Vukic.
“We just need to control the game and play our style. We play crafty and if our touch is on, we will score goals,” he said.
