SEATTLE – In a reversal of fortunes, the Bainbridge varsity tennis team split last Friday’s match with Garifield High at the Amy Yee Tennis Center.
The Spartan girls cracked the goose egg in the front of their season record by scrambling 3-2 to their first win of the season.
The Bainbridge boys had a number of close matches but fell 1-4 to the Bulldogs.
On the boys’ side at No. 1 singles, Eli Wagner lost 2-6, 4-6 to the crafty left-handed play of August Knox.
At No. 2, Ryan Wilson of BHS lost to Mitch Battison 6-1, 6-0.
In the No. 1 doubles match, the team of Jeremy Lipschutz and Maxwell Brown succumbed to Nick Bishop and Andrew Suver 4-6, 2-6. At No. 2 doubles Aidan Sullivan and Mason Ogden had an epic battle with Jack Holt and Ben Ferry. After losing the first set 5-7, they went down 1-5 in the second set. Things seem to gel at that point and the Spartans rolled off four straight games to bring the score even at 5-5.
Then, after a game involving 10 deuce points, Sullivan’s service game was broken.
And with the score 5-6, Bainbridge broke back to send the set into a tiebreaker. The Bulldogs closed the door 7-5 in the tiebreaker, however, to win the match 5-7, 6-7.
At No. 3 doubles Alec Chan and Kawin Nikomborirak handed Garfield their only loss on the boys’ side, downing Ryan Lock and Mike Loughran 6-1, 6-0.
On the girls’ side, at No. 1 singles Catherine Rolfes fell to the Alex Ferry 0-6, 2-6.
At No. 2 singles Mallory Browne won her first singles match of the season after besting Eva Holt 6-3, 7-5.
In the No. 1 doubles match, Marianne Milander and Ellie Van Slyke lost in two very competitive sets 4-6, 5-7.
At No. 2 doubles, Mollie Alpaugh and Madison Barrett fought through a three-set marathon match by closing it out in a third set tiebreaker 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
At No. 3 doubles, Katie Hughes and Morgan Wickline won in two sets 6-4, 6-3.
The Metro matchup put the boys’ record at 4-4, while the girls improved to 1-7.
