It was a good weekend of action for Bainbridge High’s gymnastics, wrestling and swimming teams as all three will be well-represented in their respective state tournaments this weekend.

The biggest winner was the girls gymnastics team, which won its district title and qualified for state as a team.

Freshman Sarah Rice won the vault event, placed second in beam and third in all-around. She also was fifth in bars and ninth in the floor exercise competition.

Other Spartans who placed were Rachel Kaminer, seventh in the beam and 10th in all-around; and Marelle Summers, eighth in bars.

The state gymnastics meet will be held Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall

The BH wrestling team placed third with 175 points in the District 2 tournament. Champion O’Dea totaled 201 and Highline was runner-up with 179 points.

Connor Kenyon (170) and Weber Coryell (182) were district champions, while Alex Griewe (132), Dylan Read (138) and Alex Hoover (145) lost in the finals to place second in their respective weight classes. Other BHS state qualifiers and are: Caleb Samson (138), third; Tyler Moniz (170) third; Michael Wilkinson (113), fourth; and Chad Roberts (120), fourth.

The state wrestling tournament will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.

The boys swimming team totaled 208 points to finish third in the district meet behind Lakeside (294) and Mercer Island (226).

The Spartans won two events: Andrew McCarthy captured the 200 free (1:44.86) and brother Todd McCarthy placed first in the 100 back (52.92).

BHS had several runner-up finishes, including: the 200 medley relay; the 400 free relay; defending champion Andrew McCarthy in the 500 free; and Colin Chupik in the 100 free.

Lakeside upset Mercer Island in the district event by winning six races. The Spartans will challenge Mercer Island and Lakeside again this Friday and Saturday in the state 3A meet at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
