BAINBRIDGE – The Bainbridge Spartans ruled the roost during the 30th annual Spartan Relays at the Bainbridge Island Aquatics Center and easily finished first in the five-team invitational.
BHS tallied 61 points during the Spartan Relays, and took first in the varsity races for the 200-yard medley relay, the 800-yard freestyle relay, the 200-yard butterfly relay, the 200-yard breaststroke relay, the 400-yard IM relay, the 400-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The Spartans also won the signature event of the meet, the 6×25-yard innertube relay.
The foursome of Ani Duni, Allison Murphy, Greta Huber and Amanda Comeau won the innertube race in 2:12.56, nearly 10 seconds faster than the number-two finishers from Marysville Pilchuck High (2:22.67). The gap would have been greater, if not for a missed transition into the tube by the Spartans partway through the race that left Bainbridge fans — and tubers — frantic.
The other highlight of the meet was the state-qualifying time by the Spartan foursome of Murphy, Duni, Comeau and Olivia Dow in the 200-yard medley relay.
The relay team took first in the event with a time of 1:56.27, which is better than the mark needed to advance to the state 3A championships in the event (1:57.00).
The Spartan swimmers return home to face Garfield at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25 at the Bainbridge Island Aquatics Center.
