The Bainbridge Spartans sailing gold team won the Northwest Interscholastic Sailing Association’s Team Race District Championship on Whidbey Island April 27-28.
Senior captain Talia Esarey led the Spartans while Alexander and Adam Turloff, Joseph Tappen, Carson Domansky, Cyrus Yan, Holden Goodham, Nelson Dorsey and Beckett Ladenburg helped the squad to the title.
Team racing is 3 vs. 3 that includes doublehanded boats working together to slow their opponents or get teammates ahead for a total of 10 points or fewer across the finish line for each race.
The Spartans faced Anacortes, Oak Harbor, Olympia, Port Townsend and Sehome and won all five matchups in the first and second rounds, including finishing first, second and third in four of the 10 matchups.
The Spartans will head to the Baker Team Race National Championships May 17-19 for the first time in years. After heading to nationals in the singlehanded racing in October 2023, Bainbridge will look to complete the triple crown May 4-5 by attempting to qualify for nationals in the fleet race district championships at Seafarers’ Memorial Park in Anacortes.
If the Spartans place top two out of 20, they will qualify for the Mallory Fleet Nationals at College of Charleston in June. If Bainbridge finishes third, the Spartans earn an at-large bid to the Phebe King National Invitational at the Naval Academy.
