Bremerton and Bainbridge both had undefeated swim teams going into the Jan. 15 meet at BHS.
The Spartans showed they deserve to be the only one deserving of that status, winning all 12 events and swamping the Knights 135-33.
BHS coach Kristin Gellert said it was impressive they were able to do that considering some of the swimmers didn’t compete in their regular events. “Some of the guys were swimming in off events and not their typical events, and they pushed themselves and pushed each other,” Gellert said.
The Spartans dominated from the start, taking the top three spots in the 200-yard medley relay. The first-place team consisted of junior Sota Inoue, sophomore Jack Rogowski, freshmen Wyatt Livingston and Alex Geddes. Their time was 1 minute, 49.39 seconds. Freshman Leland Hilgers won the 200 freestyle with a clocking of 1:57.98, while teammate Leo Soboil was second.
Spartan standout Geddes had personal best times in two events, but in the 500 free he actually placed second to junior Ryan Rich in the most-exciting race of the meet. Rich was about a second faster with his time of 5:30.45, with Geddes touching the wall in 5:31.85.
“His [Geddes] 500 was a personal best by a lot,” Gellert said. “He dropped a lot of time there and really pushed himself. It’s inspiring.” Geddes also landed a personal best in the 400 free relay.
In the 100 backstroke, senior Aidan Cole, sophmore Beckett Lipton and Hilgers finished first, second and third, with the winning time 59.96 seconds. Freshman Wyatt Livingston finished first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.08, a good enough time to qualify for state. Inoue placed second.
Gellert emphasized for her team to focus on consistent energy and to show up for each other in and out of the pool. “Keeping the team component in mind is really important, so we just keep driving that home as we go into the postseason and keep our eye on the big prize at the end,” Gellert said.
