The Bainbridge Spartans suffered their first loss of the season in varsity boys swimming & diving last week at the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center.
Newport outlasted Bainbridge 100-83, with wins in seven of 11 races.
The Spartans started the contest with a win in the 200-yard medley relay.
The speedy squad of Andrew Witty, Tyler Stewart, Alex Miller and Jude Wenker placed first in 1:40.44. Their finishing time was a state-qualifying time for the 3A championships (the mark needed for 3A state is 1:41:00.)
Wenker also had a 3A time in the 200-yard individual medley. He touched the wall at 1:56.42, and finished second to Newport’s Nathan Lee (1:55.63).
Bainbridge swept the top three spots in 1-meter diving, with Kiernan Liberman taking first with a finals score of 278.55.
Brian Taylor was second for Bainbridge (250.80), followed by fellow Spartan Guy Weibel in third (188.60).
The relay team of Oskar Bannister, Ben Cohen, Witty and Harrison Villella placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
The foursome won in a state-qualifying time of 1:31.37. (The mark needed for state is 1:32:00.)
Wenker had another state time in the 100-yard backstroke. He finished in 54.03 for second place, behind Lee of Newport (53.35). Swimmers with a time of 54.60 or faster advance to the 3A state championships.
The Spartans won the last two events of the meet.
Witty was first in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a state time of 1:00.24. (The qualifying time for state is 1:01:30.)
Bainbridge won the 400-yard freestyle relay, with Bannister, Villella, Steward and Wenker taking first in 3:18.11.
The time was also a state qualifier; the mark needed for 3A state championship in the event is 3:24:00.
