BHS swimmers primed for district, state events

Andrew McCarthy’s school record in the 500 freestyle highlighted the boys swim team’s third-place finish at last week’s Metro Championships. McCarthy, a freshman, clocked 4:51.77 to break Austin Hallett’s 2006 standard of 4:53.60.

“He was very pumped up about it,” said coach Greg Colby. “I’d like to see him go under 4:50 at state.”

The boys team is competing in the district championships Friday and Saturday at the Mary Wyate Pool on Mercer Island, with the state meet scheduled Feb. 20-21 at the King County Aquatic Center.

The team already has a number of state-qualifying times, so Colby’s main focus at district is adding two relay teams – the 200 medley and 200 free – and Cody Jenkins in the 100 butterfly. The medley team was .01 second off the state standard at Metro, with Jenkins just .04 shy. The 200 free relay needs to make up .66 of a second. Colby also hopes for a top-six team finish.

While McCarthy was the team’s only Metro champion, the Spartans had a number of top-six finishes en route to their overall total of 200 points. They trailed Seattle Prep (269) and Lakeside (254).
