The Bainbridge Island Roots 6th Grade Navy team won the state title this year.
They beat Bellevue Gold 39-11, Bellevue Christian 43-27, Ferndale 61-42, Shorewood in overtime 58-55 and Lewiston in the title game 60-56. It was said to be the first BI team to accomplish the feat.
Team members are: Joe Colagrossi, Dominic D’Amico, Sam Hodus, Jax Kingrey, Tom McFadden, Ryan Rohrbacher, Heath Voegtlin, Blake Watson and Brody Weindl. Coaches: Will Ferris and David Rohrbacher. This is the first Middle School State Championship ever won by a team from Bainbridge Island.
BI Roots is a nonprofit select-feeder club for boys and girls grades 3-8.
Three other teams competed for BI – eighth grade, another sixth grade team and fifth grade – in the 9th annual Boys State Middle School Basketball Championships in Spokane. To qualify, the 500 teams had to place first or second in a league or qualifying tournament.
