Bainbridge Island rowing sent a record four boats to the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championship in Sarasota, Fla., June 6-9.
The four boats included Men’s U-17 4+ with coxswain, Men’s Varsity 4+ with coxswain, Women’s Varsity 4x and Men’s Varsity 4-.
The U-17 squad finished fifth in the nation in 7 minutes, 5.83 seconds, 10 seconds behind champion OKC Riversport. Sophomores Logan Smith, George Johnston, Lochlan Browning and Dylan Boyce, and freshman coxswain Aaron Layman earned their first trip to nationals after placing first at the Northwest Regionals May 17-19.
The Men’s Varsity 4+ placed 12th in 6:55.19. Senior Reid Nordstrom returned for his third national appearance, junior Aki Haley made his second appearance and juniors Ben Fleming and coxswain Ava Campagna, and sophomore Theo Roesch made their debuts.
Since they finished 13th in the time trials on the first day and seventh in the semifinals, Bainbridge competed in the Finals B division, where the squad finished fourth.
Women’s Varsity 4x finished 21st in 7:34.56. Juniors Addie Carleton, Lea Chun and sophomore Dolly Courtway made their second appearance at nationals, while junior Evelyn Inithar made her debut. The four of them placed 18th in the time trial and found themselves fifth in the Finals C Division.
Men’s Varsity 4- finished 18th, placing second in the Finals C Division in 6:47.83. Senior Grant Colburn and juniors Daven Converse, Elias Wilson and Monte Horwitz made their first appearance. They finished 20th in the time trial.
