Sam Warkentin scattered three hits and struck out 11 over six innings of shut out baseball as the AAA Pirates defeated the AAA Yankees 10-0.
CUBS 7 ATHLETICS 5
The AAA Cubs continue their strong season of 10 wins and one suspended tie. The Cubs started strong with No. 1 pitcher Myron Butler pitching three innings allowing no runs on 37 pitches.
The A’s came back strong in the fourth and fifth innings by keeping the Cubs from any additional runs and closing the gap by five. The A’s Jack Peirano hit a deep line drive that skirted the chalk well past third base bringing two runs home.
The A’s had runners on second and third but Cubs shortstop Thomas Crowley closed the game out with a snap action pickup then threw to first base for the forceout.
DODGERS 14 MARINERS 11
The AAA Dodgers started out strong putting five runs on the board in the first inning thanks to a lead-off triple by Cameron Mikami, a double by Carter Daniels, a home run by Max Thomas (happy birthday Dad!) and a single by Joaquin Gurza.
Colin O’Keefe doubled for the AAA Mariners scoring two runs for the Mariners. Reilly Thomas made a great throw from right field to get the out at first, ending the first inning. Joaquin Gurza tripled in the third inning along with a single by Eric Nibarger of the Dodgers. Nibarger was fearless as he stole second base, then third, and eventually stealing home! We had a tie game (8-8) going into the fifth and final inning.
Carter Daniels started the rally with a single, and the Dodgers scored six runs to go ahead 14-8.
Thomas threw a lot of strikes, but the Mariners rallied to close the gap to 14-11 with hits by Jeffrey Jacobson, Keegan Barnes-Grant, and Kris Madsen. With so many hits in the game, both teams felt like winners!
YANKEES 10 PIRATES 8
It was a back and forth game Monday night as the Pirates and Yankees battled for first place in the majors.
Both teams spread the wealth on offense as Yankee batters Blake Swanson, Duncan McCombs, Casey McCay, Garret Riely, Tyler Martinez-Green, Josh Parker, Avery Sand and Matias Francis combined for 11 hits and 10 runs, including a triple by Sand and a go ahead two-run homer by Martinez-Green in the top of the seventh.
Pirate batters Timmy Taylor, Austin Harper, Tino Peleti, Jack Post, Jack O’Neil, Nolan Kelly, Nick Minor and Thomas Daniels had 11 hits for eight runs, including a three-run, go-ahead homer in the fourth by Peleti.
The Yankee defense was the difference as they shut down the Pirates in the bottom of the seventh, capped by a diving catch by third baseman Evan Dulay for the final out.
DIAMONDS 16 STORM 14
Eric Lipka’s Diamonds, down by three runs in the sixth, pulled off another one of their escape acts as the Diamonds squeaked by the Storm in a 16-14 slugfest under gray skies.
Diamond pitchers Catie Muir and Julie Feikes (who also went 3 for 3 at the plate) pitched well, and got timely outs to prevent the game from getting away from them. The Storm pounded out seven hits, many of them to the outfield, with the Diamonds returning the favor with 13 hits of their own.
Storm pitchers Roxanne Edenholm and Kristin Bond (back from the DL) pitched well. Catie Muir, Andie Mitchell, Olivia Marler and Alyssa Estes all had nice hits. Allison Snare scored three runs as did Estes.
On the Storm side, Edenholm went 2 for 2 with a double that went to the fence.
Riley Gregoire scored two runs as did Rachel Gallagher. Alex Bredy made a great catch, and contributed offensively with two runs.
DIAMONDS 10 ICE 6
Diamonds pitchers Julie Feikes and Kayla Estes (six strikeouts) combined for a three-hitter to hold off the attacking Ice in a 10-6 nail-biter.
Solid defense behind the plate by Hannah Lipka (and her Ice counterpart Kyra Easley) contributed greatly. Kayla Estes hit a triple, while sister Alyssa Estes scored two runs. Allison Snare singled hard to right field. And Bailey Starbuck made a nice play at second base to save a run.
On the Ice side, starter Deahna King brought her usual heat and Caitlin McGuire finished strong also spearing a hard line drive. The Diamonds move to 9-1.
