Senior Duncan Bos sealed the comeback for the Spartans, as the first-baseman’s walk-off double in the 10th inning gave Bainbridge a 6-5 home win over 4A school Issaquah April 12 .
The Spartans trailed by a run when Trey Thompson hit a leadoff double to start the bottom of the 10th inning. Then Henry Olson hit a single, advancing Thompson into scoring position. Thompson later scored off a sacrifice fly to center field, tying the game at five apiece. Then Bos had his moment to shine, hitting a deep double to center field, scoring the winning run for the Spartans.
“[I] just got a good fastball to hit,” Bos said. “That guy was pitching for five innings, we were on him.”
The Spartans (7-3, 5-0 in Olympic League) entered the matchup rattling off three consecutive wins, sweeping the Kingston Buccaneers April 1-2 and beating the WF West Bearcats 2-1 April 10.
“We had a really tough loss two Saturdays ago against Seattle Prep at the [Northwest High School Invitational],” Bos said. “But since then, we’ve really locked in, and everyone’s been working hard at practice.”
Neither team was able to get much going in the first inning, with Spartan starting pitcher Thompson striking out the first three Issaquah batters.
Thompson continued to make quick work of the Issaquah lineup in the top of the second, forcing a strikeout, fly out, and pop out consecutively.
Braden French kicked off the hitting for the Spartans in the bottom of the second with a single to center field. Dom D’Amico got himself on base via a walk with one out, generating a scoring opportunity for the Spartans, their first of the game. Olson managed to get on base as well to load the bases, but McCrea Curfman grounded into a fielder’s choice, ending the scoring opportunity for Bainbridge and keeping the game scoreless.
Thompson let up a hit in the top of the fourth but maintained his strong pitching performance, forcing a ground out and two strikeouts to end the half inning.
“Honestly, just trying to stay loose and trusting my defense is a big factor,” Thompson said. “You know, kind of coming out here with the right mentality and positive attitude [helped us].”
Bos advanced a run home off a sac fly to center field, giving the Spartans their first run of the game. Bainbridge trailed 3-1 at the end of the fifth inning.
The Spartans had two men on in the bottom of the seventh inning when French singled on a bunt, loading the bases. Bainbridge tied the game at four apiece after D’Amico was walked, forcing in a run.
