Boys basketball: Bainbridge guard Will DiIorio named Metro League Player of the Year

Bainbridge senior Will DiIorio has been named the Metro’s Player of the Year by league coaches.

“It means a lot,” DiIorio said. “All the work that I’ve done paid off. I’m just really excited about it.”

DiIorio was all-Metro honorable mention as a junior and is the first Spartan to be named player of the year since Steven Gray in 2007.

DiIorio averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds and led the team in every statistical category.

The guard, listed at 6 feet 5 inches, has not decided where he will play college basketball.

“I received one offer from Northwest Nazarene but I’m still talking to coaches and trying to keep my options open,” he said. “Mainly it matters where I fit in a basketball program.”

Bainbridge’s entire starting five received post-season honors.

“I was really happy and proud of everybody,” DiIorio said. “It’s a big accomplishment – especially when you go against teams that we play that were the top in our region.”

Bainbridge will field a young squad next year, as the team graduates seven seniors and returns only two juniors. Sophomore Chris Bell will be the team’s only returning starter.

DiIorio’s advice: “Play like it’s the last time you’re going to play, because that last game that we played (a 67-64 loss to Sammamish)– was a really bad feeling. So take advantage of it.”
