BYS announces Fun Run winners

Despite one of the hottest holidays on record, more than 900 runners, walkers and kid-dashers participated in this year’s Bainbridge Youth Services Fourth of July Fun Run.

Despite one of the hottest holidays on record, more than 900 runners, walkers and kid-dashers participated in this year’s Bainbridge Youth Services Fourth of July Fun Run.

The 36th annual event featured a 1-mile run/walk, a 5k run/walk and a Kids Dash.

The 1-mile event broke a record for the most participants ever — 211, compared with last year’s 196.

Nearly 700 people registered for the 5K race and about 630 racers turned out for it, compared with 670 last year. In addition, there were about 75 youngsters in the Kids Dash event, compared with last year’s 40.

“Bainbridge Island’s Grand Old Fourth continues to be one of the premier running events of the West Sound, topping Silverdale’s Whale of a Run and Poulsbo’s Viking Fest for most participants,” said Greg Chapman, who has been working with racing events throughout Washington for 31 years.

More than 60 volunteers put in countless hours on the Fun Run with the cooperation of the Bainbridge Island City Council, the Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce, Bainbridge police and fire departments, the parks and recreation district and dozens of local businesses.

Runners Jonnie Dunne, (25-29) and Janet McDevitt, 41, won the overall 5K race, while Joe Jaszewski (30-39) and Isabel Thompson (13-15) and Natalie Gillat won the overall 1-mile run.

The real winners, however, of the event are Bainbridge Island youth. All proceeds (the total was not yet available) benefit Bainbridge Youth Services, which provides free counseling, job training, scholarships and more for youth ages 12 to 19.

“We want to thank the community and our sponsors for their ongoing support,” Marina Cofer-Wildsmith, BYS executive director, said. “None of this would be possible without their generosity.”

Entire families, teams and people young and old came out to run and walk the event — some pushing babies in strollers and others walking their dogs.  Several teams even donned colorful costumes.

The Bainbridge High School cheerleaders got the Kids Dash off to a rousing start and a crew from Kitsap Physical Therapy handed out orange slices to participants.

Island Fitness owner Michael Rosenthal was the master of ceremonies for the event, and Bainbridge Athletic Club handed out water to the finishers.
