Defending champs beat Spartans in boys lacrosse opener

BAINBRIDGE - The Bellevue Wolverines broke open a 5-5 halftime tie with two goals in the third quarter and held on to beat the Bainbridge Spartans in the season opener in boys varsity lacrosse at Memorial Stadium Friday.

BAINBRIDGE – The Bellevue Wolverines broke open a 5-5 halftime tie with two goals in the third quarter and held on to beat the Bainbridge Spartans in the season opener in boys varsity lacrosse at Memorial Stadium Friday.

Justin Angelel scored back-to-back goals for Bellevue, the three-time defending state champions, to lead the visitors over Bainbridge. The goals were the first two of the season for the sophomore midfielder and extended Bellevue’s win streak, dating back to April 25 of last season, to nine games.

Bellevue went ahead 6-5 at 6:03 of the third and Angelel then found the net again just over two minutes later to make it 7-5.

The Spartans scored just once in the second half, in the fourth, and the Wolverines put two more into the net for the final score of 9-6.

Bellevue’s Auggie Fratt led all scorers with three goals and two assists, while Max Oden had three for the Spartans.

Nate Marx, Ben Laroche and Ian Makin each scored a goal for Bainbridge.

Nate Constan contributed one assist and three ground balls for the Spartans, while Luke Pedersoen had four ground balls, and Ben Fisher and Max Wickline had two ground balls each.

Charlie Shrout finished with nine saves for the Spartans in the opener.

Bainbridge (0-1-0), next faces Seattle Prep (0-0-0) on Tuesday, March 17 at home. Game time is 6:45 p.m.
